Variant of Mytob Worm Spoofs WFU Addresses
June 9, 2005

Please be aware of a computer worm circulating on the Internet that is affecting some e-mail users on Wake Forest’s Reynolda Campus. The worm sends e-mail messages that sometimes appear to be official and often have purported University addresses in the “from” field. The spoofed addresses include, but are not limited to, webmaster@wfu.edu, administrator@wfu.edu, mail@wfu.edu and services@wfu.edu. Please know that Information Systems has blocked delivery of all known spoofed addresses. Information Systems also temporarily blocked delivery of all .zip files.

If you receive a message that matches this description, do not respond to it, do not click on any links in it, and do not open any attachments associated with it. Anytime you receive an unexplained e-mail, confirm its legitimacy with the sender before opening it, even if it appears to be from someone you know.

As you are already aware, legitimate University and business e-mail communications will never ask for account confirmations via unsolicited e-mail. Unexpected e-mail messages that ask for this information are called “phishing” or “spoofing.” You should never respond to such messages. As a reminder, all official Wake Forest University e-mail communications are sent from “IS-Communications” or “WFU News Service.”

If you suspect that you have been infected, please contact the Help Desk
immediately for assistance in cleaning the virus from the computer. If
you have questions related to viruses or other technology issues, please
contact the Help Desk at 758-4357 (xHELP).
