Critical Computing Security Alert - Beagle Virus
August 9, 2004

This message is for academic and administrative department heads, designated departmental contacts, Instructional Technology Specialists, and Information Technology Center and Information Systems staff. Please share this information with other members of your department as appropriate.

Information Systems has received several reports indicating that a variant of the Beagle virus is spreading through the Internet. The virus spreads through infected e-mails containing attachments, including file names ending in .zip.

Please note that these messages sometimes appear to be official and may have University addresses in the 'from' field. Anytime you receive an unexplained attachment, confirm its legitimacy with the sender before opening it, even if it appears to be from someone you know.

Information Systems has not observed an extensive outbreak of the virus; however, to ensure protection of personal computers on our network, Information Systems is temporarily blocking delivery of e-mails containing .zip files. Information Systems will notify the campus community when .zip file delivery has been restored.

Information Systems apologizes for any inconvenience this precaution may cause. If you need to send a .zip file during this time or have other questions about the virus, please contact the Information Systems Help Desk at xHELP (x4357) or E-mail Us.
