WFU Critical Computing Update Wake Forest Information Systems has recently learned of a new Microsoft Windows exploit that may make your ThinkPad susceptible to a variety of computing threats including hackers, viruses, and spyware. You are exposed to the threats by viewing images and pictures on your ThinkPad just by browsing Internet sites, even if you have not actually selected or clicked on an image. You are also exposed by accepting images through instant messaging programs and e-mail. An update is available now from Information Systems that will protect your data and your computer. If you are using a wired connection on campus, simply reboot your computer now to receive the update. If you are using a wireless connection on campus, shut down your computer, connect to the campus network using an Ethernet cable, and reboot your computer to receive the update. After rebooting, you will see a window pop up indicating that WMFHotfix is installing. Let the update window run – no action is required on your part. Off-campus users, including students who have not yet returned to campus, can receive the update following the simple instructions online at http://techtalk.wfu.edu. To help protect your data and your ThinkPad from computing threats such as this, Information Systems reminds users to shut down their computer and log on to the campus network weekly using a wired connection.
