Ctrax at Wake Forest
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it cost?
Unlimited tethered downloads (see below) through Ctrax music service are FREE to undergraduate students. Cost is 89¢/song to burn songs to CD or other device. Graduate students, faculty and staff can listen and download at a rate of $5.99/month. All users must pay the 89¢/song for downloads to CD or other device.
What is a tethered download?
A tethered download refers to the privileges determined by digital rights management (DRM) technology. In order to protect the copyright of the files, the DRM technology restricts the ability to burn, copy, or transfer the file to an mp3 player or to another person. Also, you will need to be connected to the Internet after 30 days of downloading a tethered file to continue listening to the file. When you purchase a song for the 89¢ fee, you are receiving a file that you now own.
Can I charge songs to my student account?
No. At this time, song purchases can be made with a credit card only.
Is this available for off-campus students, too?
Yes!
Can faculty, staff and graduate students also use Ctrax?
Yes! Graduate students, faculty and staff can listen and download at a rate of $5.99/month. All users must pay the 89¢/song for downloads to CD or other device.
What format is music downloaded through Ctrax?
Ctrax uses the Windows Media Audio (*.wma) encoded at 128kbps.
How do I burn Ctrax songs to my iPod, Mobi, or other mobile device?
Only purchased songs can be burned. You can transfer to your Mobi or other mobile device directly from the ThinkPad. To transfer to your iPod, first burn the purchased song to a CD. After burning it to a CD you can “rip” it into an mp3 file, then transfer it to the iPod.
How often is the music catalog updated?
The music catalog is updated twice a week from MusicNet.
Can I still listen for free over the winter and summer breaks?
Yes, as long as you connect to the Internet every 30 days to update your licenses. If the licenses expire, you will not be able to play the songs, but they will remain in your My Music file. When you resubscribe, the songs will be playable again.
What happens when I graduate, or am no longer affiliated with Wake Forest? What happens to my music?
Once you leave Wake Forest, you will no longer be eligible to access Cdigix with Wake Forest's rate, but you will be able to subscribe at currently available consumer rates. The music you downloaded via the subscription service will only be accessible for a period of 1 to 30 days (depending on when the status check occurs) after your account is terminated. The songs you paid for separately are yours to keep.
Where can I get help using Ctrax?
